Yacht registration Malta: Leading with digital certificates
Since 1 June 2025, owners of yachts have benefited from secure, digitally issued certificates, delivered directly in PDF format, for both new registrations and renewals. With this change, Malta is once again demonstrating its outstanding position in the maritime sector. The Ecovis experts know what deadlines apply to paper-based documents and how the certificates are protected against tampering.
Supported by a robust legal system under the Merchant Shipping Act, the Maltese flag has become the flag of choice for thousands of vessels. The Maltese authorities have consistently demonstrated responsiveness to industry needs, offering solutions tailored for yacht ownership, chartering, and financing.
Issuing digital certificates
In an effort to improve the industry’s efficiency and innovation, the Malta Ship Registry began issuing certificates electronically in conformity with the IMO Facilitation Committee Circular – Guidelines for the Use of Electronic Certificates, with effect from 1 June 2025.
The new electronic certificates are legally equivalent to their paper counterparts and carry full effect for lawful navigation, compliance, and inspection purposes. Any hardcopy certificates issued before 1 June 2025 remain valid until their expiry and must still be carried on board.

Protection against manipulation
Each certificate is digitally protected against tampering, includes a unique tracking number, and features a QR code to ensure security and international recognition. This QR code, combined with ISO/IEC 20248 DigSig technology, allows inspectors, port authorities, and other stakeholders to verify authenticity quickly. Verification can be carried out either online through a standard QR code scan or offline via the DigSig Authenticator app, ensuring reliability even in cases of limited connectivity.
The adoption of electronic certification forms part of Malta’s broader initiatives to drive the digitalisation of the industry, thus streamlining registry operations, reducing paper use, and improving sustainability. For yacht owners and their advisors, the advantages are tangible: faster and more convenient issuance of certificates, enhanced verification during inspections and charters, and greater alignment with international digital standards.
